Transfer Seminar

International and Comparative Higher Education
In May 2014, I was chosen by UNCW to travel to various European countries to build upon and expand our relationships with international institutions. During my trip, I met with two of my former students who were studying abroad in England and Wales,  and met with faculty and staff members from Swansea University in Wales, Gothenburg University and Stockholm University in Sweden, and Oulu University in Finland.

Upon my return from the trip, I have spoken to faculty and staff groups on campus about the importance of study abroad experiences and have taught students about international and comparative higher education.

Strengthening the First-Year Experience
I have been involved with first-year experience intiatives since graduate school when I was a graduate assistant at the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition.  Since then, I have taught, coordinated, advised, chaperoned, and mentored hundreds of first-year students.

Transformation of UNI 201 at UNCW
I took over the coordination of UNI 201: Transfer Seminars at UNCW in 2012 and transformed the course from a 2-credit hour elective to a 3-credit hour course that fulfills graduation requirements. Demand for UNI 201 more than doubled and students consistently gave the course high marks.

Whether transferring directly from another institution or from the military, this course is helpful for transfers during their first-semester at UNCW.  Students leave UNI 201 with a sense of community at UNCW and a greater understanding of college student transitions. They will have formed a relationship with a faculty member in their major, built a comprehensive academic and career plan, and learned about the campus resources that will help them succeed.
